Costumes

A costume from the 21st century move “Moulin Rouge.” Hollywood started using tango in cult scenes in some of their movies, and this is one of those movies.

This is a modern day ballroom tango couple. The woman’s dress is bright and flashy, as well as tight on the top and flowy on the bottom. The man is dressed in black, and he is there to solely support the woman.

This photo depicts some of the very beginnings of ballroom tango. It is apparent that the man’s costume has not transformed much over time. But the women is fairly covered up. Her dress is a little short, for the time, and the back of her dress is see through. The initial ballroom tango costumes were seen as vulgar and indecent.

This is what ballroom tango costumes looked like around World War I. It has been said that when WWI came around, ballroom tango costumes got racier. Not much of this woman’s body is showing, aside from her arms. But the costumes were still said to be indecent.

Club Costumes

If you’re wanting to show off your tango moves at the nearest club, it will be very important as to what your fashion choice is. The first rule of the game is to keep things cool but also PG; don’t show off too much skin. This kind of tango is fairly small sized and family oriented so you don’t want to damage your own reputation, but it’s not bad to want to go for a slightly sexy look and keep yourself from getting too hot. The ladies will want to avoid anything named “Salsa Costume.” Instead, look for sleeveless tops, skinny jeans, or strappy dresses. The men will have very relaxed dress with a button down shirt and either jeans or slacks. Happy dancing!
